INTERNSHIPS

Land trust work is a rapidly growing sector within the environmental field, and gaining relevant experience is increasingly essential for those pursuing conservation careers. An internship with Utah Open Lands offers hands-on, grassroots experience with a growing conservation organization, and may be eligible for academic credit through participating colleges and universities. Internships are typically unpaid and require a commitment of up to 20 hours per week.

Internships for the 2026 summer field season have been filled. Check back for fall/winter internship opportunities, or fill out the general interest form for internships. We are happy to consider hosting interns that have secured funding through their school or university outside the typical application cycle.

Events and outreach

The Events and Outreach Internship focuses on sharing the stories behind the lands protected by Utah Open Lands and helping connect the community to conservation. Interns support the organization’s outreach efforts by developing and sharing engaging content across social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. Working closely with the Director of Community Outreach, the intern helps translate the broader narrative and strategy into compelling posts that highlight where conservation has happened, why it matters, and how people can be part of protecting the places they love. This role provides experience in storytelling, digital engagement, and communicating the impact of land conservation to a wider audience.

Conservation Stewardship

The Conservation Stewardship Internship provides hands-on field experience in land stewardship and conservation management. Interns assist with monitoring conservation easement properties and fee title-owned preserves, mapping social trails, and assessing restoration needs across protected lands. Working with the Director of Conservation and Conservation Ranger, interns help collect and manage field data using tools such as iNaturalist and ArcGIS. The internship also involves supporting the development of restoration plans, organizing stewardship records and databases, and assisting with outreach programs like invasive weed pulls and bioblitzes. This role offers valuable experience in plant and wildlife identification, evaluating ecosystem health, and implementing practical strategies to steward and restore conserved landscapes.

GIS and Land Managment

The GIS and Land Management Internship provides hands-on experience supporting land conservation and stewardship projects. Interns assist with baseline assessments of newly acquired properties by mapping and analyzing key landscape elements, such as native and invasive species, habitat, geology, soils, scenic viewsheds, and open space connectivity. They will also help create photo point maps and logs that support baseline documentation and conservation easement monitoring. In addition, interns develop engaging GIS story maps that showcase the breadth and impact of Utah Open Lands’ conservation work, which are used for public outreach, education, and website content.
