WE DID IT!
Utah Open Lands is thrilled to announce that we have secured the Cottonwood Heights Bonneville Shoreline Trail Property.  In the end, the landowners contributed over $1,000,000 in value and we are now taking steps toward bringing this land into public ownership!

Thank you to everyone who donated, pledged, and committed to this open space preservation project! Because of the dedication of this community, the 26-acres at the base of Little Cottonwood Canyon will remain open space, offering retreat, respite, and solace in perpetuity.

COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS BONNEVILLE SHORELINE TRAIL:
PROTECTED AND DEFENDED!

Utah Open Lands has never experienced the need to defend an open space a mere 48 hours after its preservation, but no matter when a threat arises, Utah Open Lands always stands ready to steward and defend the precious open spaces under our trust. The recent UDOT transportation alternative that was released on November 20th for Little Cottonwood Canyon, proposing a diesel cog train on our newly acquired preservation, is the poster child of poor planning on the part of the agency and is something that Utah Open Lands takes seriously.

In alerting UDOT to our concerns, along with concerns voiced by the City of Cottonwood Heights, UDOT has made statements that, in proposing new alternatives, they will work to avoid the open space. Utah Open Lands needs you to stand with us in telling UDOT that avoidance of this protected landscape is the only option.  When we think about our iconic landscapes here in Utah, the entrance to Little Cottonwood Canyon rises to the top. These scenic viewsheds cannot be marred by development, including poor transportation planning.

What was UDOT thinking? We can only speculate, but what we know is that this alternative is bad for open space, open space which is critical to Utah's economy.  Please make comments in anticipation of UDOT releasing its draft EIS and send comments to your elected officials, City, County, and State, that a gondola or tram on the 26-acre Cottonwood Heights Bonneville Shoreline Trail Preserve is unacceptable.

The Cottonwood Canyons are a
calling card for Utah's tourism industry and the backyard to those living on the Wasatch Front and Back. Working with the landowners whose desire is to see it protected, but who are also charged with maximizing returns, Utah Open Lands has secured a small window of opportunity to save this land for Open Space and a critical link in the Bonneville Shoreline Trail. We cannot thank the landowners enough for donating $835,000 in value - bringing the project cost down to $3-million and giving us this opportunity for preservation.

It's open space or another housing development.
The entrance to LCC is iconic. It is Utah. It is part of our heritage, and should be a part of our future.
Check out the map to know the exact parcel and location that we're hoping to place a conservation easement on with this campaign.

Utah Open Lands has secured a
$500,000 grant from the LeRay McAllister Critical Lands fund to save this land, and $1 million from the City of Cottonwood Heights.
The landowners are willing to make a partial contribution as well, but this critical Bonneville Shoreline Trail link will need your support.
Connections take us home.
The Bonneville Shoreline Trail is a part of what makes the SLC valley special. Instant access to the outdoors. From the 'burbs to the bench, Utahns value the ability to get out of the day-to-day and into the wild of our own backyards.
