Stewardship Field Worker

Job Description: Hike and observe conserved lands to evaluate and document the conditions of key natural features.

Responsibilities: Monitor conservation properties which entails traveling to the properties, observing them—usually hiking through them—to observe and document conditions of the land, plants, and wildlife; Report observations; Communicate with landowners.

Required skills and abilities: Able to travel to locations throughout Utah; you will be reimbursed for miles you put on your personal vehicle for this volunteer work; Physically able to hike and move around in wild areas, including in remote locations; Good communication skills; Able to carry out careful observations and keep good records in wild areas, sometimes under harsh environmental conditions, and almost always while being distracted by nature.

Beneficial additional skills and abilities: A camera and GPS and experience using them.

Time Commitment: 4 to 40 hours per week  (flexible hours; we will establish a schedule together); May 15 to August 15, 2010

Stewardship Administration Intern

Job Description:  Contribute this winter and spring to the planning and administration of conservation stewardship programs for 2010. 

Responsibilities: Interpret and record data from GIS maps; File and manage data to prepare for the 2010 field season; Collaboratively plan details for at least one 2010 event involving volunteers.

Required skills and abilities: Map reading skills; Proven record of successful attention to detail in complex tasks; Good interpersonal and communication skills.

Beneficial additional skills and abilities: GIS experience and skills; Experience working with databases and spreadsheets, particularly MS Access and Excel; Experience organizing and leading volunteers.

Time Commitment: 4 to 10 hours per week (flexible hours; we will establish a schedule together) February 1 to April 1, 2010

Webmaster

Job Description:  Upgrade, update, and add-to Utah Open Lands’ website to ensure that it is easy to navigate and meets the needs of landowners and others.

Responsibilities: Develop new web pages and applications; Maintain the website; Train UOL staff in webpage management and maintenance.

Required skills and abilities: Website development and maintenance.

Beneficial additional skills and abilities: GIS experience.

Time Commitment: 4 to 20 hours per week  (flexible hours; we will establish a schedule together)

Castleton Tower Campground Manager

Job Description: Regularly checks the Castleton Tower Primitive Climber’s campground; this job is critically important to ensuring conservation of the land while helping to support an excellent, primitive camping experience.

Responsibilities:-Ensure that wag-bags are stocked in the dispenser; Collect donations from the pipe safe for Utah Open Lands; Assess needs of the campground and organize volunteers to meet those needs; Communicate campground requirements with campers and ask for feedback; Communicate regularly with Utah Open Lands.

Required skills and abilities: Good interpersonal and communication skills; Ability to regularly visit the campground every few days; Conservation ethic.

Beneficial additional skills and abilities: Familiarity with rock climbing, particularly in the Castle Rock area; Experience with leave-no-trace camping;

Time Commitment: Campground should be visited at least once or twice each week.  The amount of time spent during each visit will vary depending on the needs of the campground.

Benefits: Collaborative service to protect one of the top climbing destinations in North America; Help to ensure that the campground remains fee-free; Take a guiding role in the management of the campground;

Interact with climbers and campers; Contribute to conservation of key open lands in Utah.

Castleton Tower Primitive Camp Fire Ranger

Job Description: Regularly checks the Castleton Tower Primitive Climber’s campground for fire rings and to assess fire-building practices.

Responsibilities: Assess fire-building practices at the campground; Remove and erase rogue fire rings, with the help of other volunteers as needed; Work with Utah Open Lands to develop effective management strategies for the campground.

Required skills and abilities: Good interpersonal and communication skills; Physically able to regularly visit the campground and carry stones away from fire ring locations; Conservation ethic.

Beneficial additional skills and abilities: Experience with leave-no-trace camping;

Time Commitment: Campground should be visited at least once or twice each week.  The amount of time spent during each visit will vary depending on the needs of the campground; Total volunteer service commitment will be 3 months or less.

Castleton Tower Primitive Camp Wagbagger

Job Description: Ensure that wagbags are kept stocked at the Castleton Tower Primitive Climber’s Camp and that campers are kept informed and motivated to maintain a clean camp.

Responsibilities: Stock wagbags in the dispenser at the camping area (the wagbags will be provided by Utah Open Lands); Communicate with campers; Work with Utah Open Lands to develop effective management strategies for the campground.

Castleton Tower Primitive Camp Detailer

Job Description: Work with the campground manager to assess needs of the campground and meet those needs, including raking out rogue tire tracks, and removing invasive weeds;  this position will be important for maintaining sightliness of the camping area.

Responsibilities: Visit the campground as needed (particularly after busy weekends) to detail the camping area.  This may include raking rogue tire tracks, removing trash, repairing signs, etc., but should not include bigger projects for which it would be well to mobilize a larger volunteer force; Communicate with campers;

This volunteer will be the go-to person for small jobs that do not warrant mobilizing other volunteers.

Work with Utah Open Lands to develop effective management strategies for the campground.

Required skills and abilities: Good interpersonal and communication skills; Physically able to visit the campground and perform detailing tasks; Conservation ethic.

Castleton Tower Web Master

Job Description: Develop and maintain a webpage for Castleton Tower that will inform climbers and others and help to coordinate sustainable, fee-free camping

Responsibilities: Work with the climbing community and others to identify content for a webpage focused on the protected Castleton Tower Climbers Primitive Camp; Develop the webpage; Maintain and update the webpage so that it is current and pertinent; Train other webpage administrators/developers for this project; Work with the Castleton Tower campground manager as needed to support their blog; Work with other volunteers as needed to track volunteer service hours.

Required skills and abilities: Good communication and interpersonal skills; Webpage development and maintenance.

Desired additional skills and abilities: Familiarity with rock climbing, particularly in the Castle Rock area; Demonstrated ability to communicate about land conservation issues; Demonstrated ability to inspire and motivate people.

Volunteer Program Manager

Job Description:  General oversight and management of UOL’s volunteer program, including recruitment, screening, training, and placement of volunteers who are interested in donating their time to our varied programs.

Responsibilities: Aid staff in coordinating our volunteer program plan, assessing needs and establishing procedures, including retention and recognition of UOL volunteers; Marketing, recruiting and screening for appropriate volunteers; Maintaining volunteer database; Aid in training process and materials.

Qualifications: Excellent organizational skills; Good communication and interpersonal skills; Must be able to be self motivated and work independently.

Desired additional skills and abilities: Demonstrated ability to communicate about land conservation issues; Demonstrated ability to inspire, manage and motivate people.

Time Commitment: 2-8 hours / week (NOTE: This is a new program, the estimated hours required will be determined). Utah Open Lands asks for no more than a 3 month commitment for this position.
